19 January 2009 marks the 200th aniversary of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). 2009 will see a whole host of events and publications in different countries devoted to the life and work of one of the USA’s greatest and most celebrated writers. I summarise 21 (and add – see entry on this blog for 7 July 2009 – that the bicentennial year also sees the publication on-line of my own doctoral thesis on Poe from 1987 – see image above):

1) This Saturday, 17 January, already saw, in the Tres Rosas Amarillas bookshop in Madrid, the event UNA NOCHE CON POE (A NIGHT WITH POE), billed as a ‘nocturnal and terrorific reading’ of tales by Poe, accompanied by a fancy-dress spectacle:
Present were some of the writers aho participated in the new annotated edition of Poe’s complete tales in Spanish, “Cuentos completos: Edición comentada” (2008), published by Páginas de Espuma (Madrid): www.escueladeescritores.com/bicentenario-poe. This edition, prepared by the writers Fernando Iwasaki and Jorge Volpi, includes a commentary on each of the tales by a Spanish or Latin American writer.

7) The 2009:1 issue (published in February) of NEXUS (publication of AEDEAN – Asociación Española de Estudios Anglo-Norteamericanos) is dedicated to Poe and includes articles by Scott Peeples, Santiago Rodríguez Guerrero-Strachan and Margarita Rigal and Beatriz Montero. 8) On 19 February 2009, Poe’s spirit will return once more to Mexico, to preside over an event (lecture/round table ) in Pachuca (Hidalgo state), held in the Ricardo Garibay Library and organised by the Consejo Estatal para la Cultura y las Artes de Hidalgo.
9) The Universidad Complutense de Madrid will host, on 18 March 2009: http://www.ucm.es/info/FInglesa/indice.html the one-day event: 'A One Day Commemoration: Edgar Allan Poe, ‘Tales, Fancy and Truth’'. This event, dedicated to the memory of José Luis Palomares, includes a number of scholarly contributions, as well as a reading of THE RAVEN and a projection of the film version of THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM.
10) On 18-20 March, the University of Lisbon will host an international symposium on 'Poe and Gothic Creativity' (the call for papers has expired). There will also be a Poe exhibition at Portugal’s National Library:
11) On 24 and 25 April 2009 Moscow willl host the symposium 'The Adventures of Edgar Allan Poe Through Time and Cultures', organised by the Moscow State University , the Russian State University for the Humanities and the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences. 12) In a further event in Spain, from 21 to 23 May the University of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid region) will host an international conference: ‘POE PRESENTE EN EL SIGLO DE LA ANSIEDAD’ (‘POE, PRESENT IN THE CENTURY OF ANXIETY’). The deadline for proposals is 1 April.

13) On 30 July 2009, the City Museum of Guadalajara (Mexico) hosted a reading by the Mexican actor Vicente Herrera of Poe’s poem EL CUERVO (THE RAVEN) and the (very Poesque) short story ‘Casa tomada’, by Julio Cortázar. The event had the support of the Guadalajara city council and Mexico’s National Museum of Fine Arts :

21) 2009 saw the publication in Spain of the illustrated book SINIESTRAS AMADAS: 22 DELIRIOS NECRO-ROMÁNTICOS DE EDGAR ALLAN POE, (‘Sinister and beloved: 22 Necro-Romantic Moments of Delirium by Edgar Allan Poe’), by Jack Mircala, with new translations of four tales ('Ligeia', 'Morella', 'Berenice' and 'Eleonora')
and 18 poems, all united by the fact of being dedicated to real or imaginary women.
Both the translations and the highly imaginative illustrations are the work of Mircala himself.

13) El 30 de julio de 2009, el Museo de la Ciudad de Guadalajara (México) fue el cenario de una lectura, brindada al público por el actor mexicano Vicente Herrera, del poema EL CUERVO (THE RAVEN) de Poe, más el (muy poeiano) relato ‘Casa tomada’, de Julio Cortázar. El acto contó con el apoyo tanto del Ayuntamiento de Guadalajara como del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes :
